Frightening kids films and tv!

So off the back of 'what makes a childrens classic' post which ended on the that scary Alice film, it made me think of all the things that put the willies up me off the tele!
So here goes!

The Return to Oz. Pretty much the entire film. Especially the Wheelers *shudders*

Svankmajer's Alice. Again, pretty much of all of it is horrendous!

The Dark Crystal, Skeksis!

But I think Charn from Through the Dragons Eye was far more creepy

The Snow Queen from The Chronicles of Narnia 90s tv series. She was scary.

Hedgehog in the Fog always unsettled me slightly!

Talos from Jason and the Argonauts is pretty creepy too! (But love it! You can hear the noise of him turning his head looking at the pic!)

RIP Ray Harryhausen

As you know Ray Harryhausen passed away this week. The man is one of my heroes and one of the inspirations for how I got into illustrating. I remember watching Jason and the Argonauts as a small child (still a fave film today!) and being absolutely scared out of my wits when Talos turned his head and that noise it makes!! I jumped out of my skin!

The Gates of Argonath in the Two Towers always make me think of the shot of Talos above. I recently learned that Peter Jackson is a huge fan of Harryhausen, well, there you go then!

Clash of the Titans

As you may well be aware they've remade Clash of the Titans. I am highly sceptical of it already. The original was brill.

Also, how are the special effects going to be as good as my hero's Ray Harryhausen?! I remember being terrified watching Talos come to life in Jason and the Argonauts, and equally by Medusa in Clash of the Titans. There's something a bit more life-like with stop frame animation that CGI just doesn't capture. I might be proved wrong with the new film being shown in 3D. I just hope they don't touch Jason and the Argonauts. Surely someone must be able to come up with new film ideas these days?! :o)
